Last gasp win for Apostrophe

Last gasp win for Apostrophe27 Apr 2024

In-form mare Apostrophe left it late at Te Rapa before she arrived in the nick of time to add the G2 Travis Stakes to her record.

The daughter of our late stallion star Tavistock settled back in the field before improving near the turn and she produced a sustained finish for rider Masa Hashizume to get in the deciding stride at the end of 2000 metres.

“That was a tremendous effort and half-way down I didn’t think she could win, but she often hits a flat spot and then sprints again,” said Roger James, who prepares the mare with Robert Wellwood.

Apostrophe was coming off a previous victory in the G3 Manawatu Breeders’ Stakes and her latest success has further boosted her future broodmare value for the Inglewood Partnership.

“She’s done what every breeder wants and she’s rising seven now so this could be her last run,” James said.
“All credit to the staff, she’s high maintenance.”

Apostrophe was bred by Greg Perry's Greenwich Stud and sold through Cambridge Stud’s draft at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale with James and Wellwood signing the ticket at $60,000.

She is a daughter of the Cape Cross mare Cape South whose pedigree features our Highly Recommended mare Polygon, winner of the G2 Royal Stakes and the G3 Eulogy Stakes.
