Viking Ruler produced another Cambridge Stud sired contender for the Group 1Mercedes Derby when 3 yr old Red Ruler won at Awapuni yesterday.
Red Ruler (Ransom Bay(USA) finished impressively to win the Southern Rangitikei Veterinary Services 1400m. Held up on the home turn Red Ruler was able to regain his momentum, after having to shift ground, to take the win by a length and three quarters.
Having had only three starts for two wins and a third, Red Ruler has now earned $17,000 in stakes and holds a nomination for the $700,000 Derby to be run in March.
Purchased by trainer John Sargent at the 2006 National Yearling Sales for $60,000 Red Ruler won on debut at Hawera back in November.
Cambridge Stud will present 10 Viking Ruler yearlings at the NZB Select Sale at Karaka in 2008.
