Cambridge Stud champion sire Zabeel has been represented by his 37th individual Group 1 winner with the triumph by Gallic in the Sydney Cup (3200m) at Royal Randwick racecourse on Saturday.
Gallic became the first horse in 30 years to complete the Adelaide-Sydney Cup double. He had won the Adelaide Cup at his previous start.
It was a typical performance of a Zabeel stayer as Gallic stormed home late to snare the honours in the Group 1 feature.
Gallic, a seven-year-old, is trained by Graeme Rogerson for Lloyd Williams. He was bought from the Karaka Yearling Sales for $170,000 from the Ra Ora/Haunui Farm draft.
Gallic was bred by Roberts Holdings Limited - featuring Auckland veterinarian Charlie Roberts.
Another member of this family, Cross Swords, won the 1994 Sydney Cup while last week the family was also to the fore with Group 1 succes sin New Zealand through Captivate in the New Zealand Bloodstock Breeders' Stakes at Te Aroha.
Zabeel has had another outstanding season with Gallic adding to the success in the AJC Derby (Fiumucino), VRC Derby (Efficient) and Dubai Sheema Classic (Vengeance Of Rain).
