Zabeel Looks to Equal Cup Record

30 Oct 2010

Cambridge Stud sires Sir Tristram and Zabeel have been responsible for three Melbourne Cup winners each and stand as the modern-day leading providers of Cup winners.

The all-time leading provider of Melbourne Cup winners is Positano, who sired four winners in the early 1900s.  Zabeel will look to equal that record with three representatives in Tuesday’s 150th running of the Cup, namely Precedence, Zavite and Maluckyday.

Precedence, bred by Cambridge Stud in conjunction with Bloomsbury Stud, goes into the race as a last start impressive winner of the Moonee Valley Cup-Gr.2.  Raced by Dato Tan Chin Nam in conjunction with Henrietta, The Dowager Duchess of Bedford and Sir Patrick Hogan, Precedence is trained by Bart Cummings who also saddles favourite So You Think.

Zavite, trained by Bart’s son Anthony, has won at the 3200 metres Cups distance, having taken out the Stella Artois Auckland Cup-Gr.1 in March of the this year.  Michael Walker takes the ride.

Maluckyday, by Zabeel from Natalie Wood, made the Cup field after a great display of staying power to win The Lexus Stakes-Gr.3 (2500m) on Derby Day.  Bred by The Oaks Stud and sold by them for $625,000 at the 2008 NZB Karaka Premier Sale, Maluckyday is raced by Nick Moraitis who was successful in the 1997 Melbourne Cup with another son of Zabeel, Might and Power.
