Only three 3YOs have managed to win the W S Cox Plate in the last 25 years.
Significantly, two of them, Octagonal (1995) and Savabeel (2004), are by Zabeel; the other being So You Think (2009, by High Chaparral).
Saturday’s Cox Plate favourite, Helmet (Exceed and Excel), is a three-year-old, so it will be interesting to see if he can write his name into the record books alongside some of the great 3YOs of years gone by.
Apart from Octagonal (bred, raised and sold by Cambridge Stud) and Savabeel (now standing in NZ), Zabeel's other Cox Plate winners are Maldivian (2008) and Might and Power (1998).
