44th Group One winner as Zabeel sires another Victoria Derby winner

31 Oct 2014

For the last two decades racing fans have come to expect Super Sire Zabeel to have a dominant say in the outcome of the major races at the Melbourne Spring Carnival.

Despite being retired from stud duties and enjoying Derby Day in the Waikato sunshine in his Cambridge Stud paddock, Zabeel struck again in one of the great Classics of Australasian Racing today when Preferment scored a hard-fought win in the A$1.5m Victoria Derby.

It represented the 44th individual Group One winner for Zabeel and, appropriately, the Chris Waller-trained colt was co-bred by Sir Patrick and Justine, Lady Hogan who sold the horse to Waller from their Cambridge Stud consignment at the 2013 New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Premier Sale for $190,000.

Zabeel has done it all before, but to crack another Group One winner at the grand old age of 28 is something very special and certainly Sir Patrick Hogan would have taken special pleasure from the win, specially given the fact that he was on course to witness the race.

Here's a fact file for one of the greatest stallions to have ever stood in the Southern Hemisphere...
