The Farm

New Zealand’s iconic thoroughbred nursery is building on its proud history of success.

Cambridge Stud is owned by Brendan and Jo Lindsay.

It was originally established in 1976 after Patrick and Justine Hogan sold their Fencourt Stud property and purchased land at Discombe Road Cambridge.

The selection of Sir Tristram as their foundation sire would change the landscape of Australasian breeding. Not only would the stud stand this champion sire, but his equally prolific son Zabeel also.

  • New Zealand's Leading Group One Breeder

  • Awarded NZ Breeder of the Year five times

Sir Tristram

Sir Tristram arrived at Cambridge Stud in 1976; it was the beginning of a stud career which at one time saw him as the world's leading sire for individual Group One winners.

When the curtain came down on his long and illustrious career, Sir Tristram left a record of 45 individual Group One winners.

Accomplishments included winning the Australian Stallion Premiership on 6 occasions; 'The Dewar Award' (NZ & Australian combined earnings for a NZ-based stallion) 9 times; was Champion Australian Broodmare Sire 6 times and Champion NZ Broodmare Sire 3 times.

One of Sir Tristram's 45 Group One winners was his son from Lady Giselle, Zabeel.

As fate would have it, Zabeel followed on in Sir Tristram's footsteps at Cambridge Stud as a world-class sire.

Zabeel sired 46 Group One winners and no less than 166 individual Stakes Winners; was Australia’s Champion Sire twice; won 14 Dewar Awards as well as four New Zealand Stallion Premierships.

In 2019 the Cartier Horse of the Year and World Champion 3YO Roaring Lion was set to take up sire duties at Cambridge Stud.

In a devastating blow, Roaring Lion suffered a colic attack upon his arrival. Despite initially making steady progress from the two surgeries this incurred, complications necessitated that he sadly be put down.

Cambridge Stud would like to acknowledge everyone from Cambridge Equine and the stud who supported the horse through a very difficult time.

We would also like to acknowledge Roaring Lion’s UK connections, Sheikh Fahad al Thani and his family and David Redvers and his family at Tweenhills. Our loss was keenly felt in New Zealand but theirs was unimaginable.

Roaring Lion's many accomplishments included:

Cartier Horse of the Year 2018
World Champion 3YO
Timeform rated 130
Winner of four consecutive Gr.1 races from 1600m-2100m
Gr.1 Eclipse Stakes Gr1, Sandown Park
Gr.1 Juddmonte International Stakes, York
Gr.1 Qipco Irish Champion Stakes, Leopardstown
Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, Ascot
