In winning today’s A$1m Crown Oaks-Gr.1 at Flemington, Dear Demi (Dehere ex Shirley, by Zabeel) became the fourth individual Group One winner from a Zabeel mare this season.
For the record, the other three are Ocean Park (4 Group Ones this season including W S Cox Plate), It’s a Dundeel (Spring Champion Stakes) and Commanding Jewel (Thousand Guineas).
Not only did Zabeel have the distinction of being the sire-of-the-dam of today’s Oaks winner, he’s also the sire of the brave runner up, Zydeco (Zabeel ex All Time High, by Flying Spur).
Needless to say Zabeel leads the Australian Broodmare Sire Premiership by a wide margin. He won that Premiership for the first time last season. He also leads the New Zealand Broodmare Sire Premiership, a title he also won for the first time last season.
Zabeel is now the dam sire of 22 individual Group One winners.
