Bellacontte strikes again ahead of Guineas24 Oct 2021

Bellacontte has been in fine form this spring and she struck another winning blow at Trentham this afternoon ahead of a southern Group 1 tilt.

The Cambridge Stud-born filly produced a no-nonsense performance to beat her age group rivals over 1200 metres and is now a $14 chance in the New Zealand 1000 Guineas at Riccarton on November 13.

Bellacontte won the Listed O’Leary’s Fillies’ Stakes at Wanganui before she triumphed in the G3 Gold Trail Stakes at Hastings.

She was then a gallant fourth in the G3 Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes against the older horses and at Trentham she came from the back of the field to overwhelm her opposition.

Bellacontte is a daughter of the late Burgundy, whose three-year-old daughters Irish Red and Sassy Merlot drew attention to their future black-type prospects yesterday with smart wins and Riccarton and Matamata respectively.

Bred by Dr Kelvin Chong, Bellacontte was sold to owner Ben Kwok as a foal at foot via the Gavelhouse platform.

She is out of the Tavistock mare Devon Doll, who hails from a well-performed family that includes our own superstar mare, multiple Group 1 winner Probabeel.
