Cape Breton (Peintre Celebre x Lihir) has won the AJC Tabcorp Handicap (200m) at Randwick on Saturday.

Cape Breton, formerly runner-up in the Group 1 Queensland Derby as a three-year-old, was ridden by Nash Rawiller and scored at odds of better than 40-to-one.

Despite the long odds, trainer Danny Williams was confident of a bold run from his horse. "I was quietly confident he would win," Williams said.

"He had no luck in the running when he came back from a spell at Canberra," Wiliams said. "And he wasn't suited by the rock hard track there second up."

Cape Breton was taken forward from an awkward barrier by Rawiller in the early stages and the combination proved too good for their rivals in the concluding stages winning from Shadow Cabinet.

Cape Breton was sold by Cambridge Stud at the 2004 National Yearling Sales at Karaka for $60,000.
