Cotehele stamped himself as a three-year-old with the potential to be a serious age group player this spring with a commanding first-up performance at Goulburn.

Trained by John O’Shea, the imposing son of Tavistock resumed off a four-month break over 1300 metres and travelled comfortably behind the pace for rider Alysha Collett.

The colt strode to the front 200 metres from home and sailed clear with a minimum of urging to win by more than three lengths.

Cotehele was a debut winner at Newcastle last season before placing at Warwick Farm and ended his juvenile preparation with a respectable seventh in the G2 BTC Sires’ Produce Stakes.

Bred by Kevin Hickman’s Valachi Downs, he was purchased by O’Shea at Karaka for $100,000 and is a half-brother to the G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas winner Ugo Foscolo.
