Dionysus produced an emphatic performance on the synthetic track at Cambridge this afternoon in his return to action over 1550 metres.

Part of our draft at the 2019 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale, the Ocean Park four-year-old hadn’t been sighted since he placed at Te Aroha in February.

Dionysus had indicated he was forward to resume for Roger James and Robert Wellwood with a runner-up finish on the course in a lead-up trial last month and he proved far too good in his resuming run.

The gelding was given a gun run in the trail by rider Ryan Elliot before angling off the fence before the turn and bolted clear to score by five and a-half lengths.

Dionysus was purchased for $45,000 by his trainers at Karaka on behalf of James’ long-time clients Ron and Fran Dixon.

He is the first foal on the unraced Tavistock mare La Quinta Gold, who produced an Embellish filly last year, and she is from the family of the G3 Vanity Stakes winner and G1 South Australian Oaks placegetter Gold Lottey.
