Derby looms large for Tavistock Abbey

Three-year-old Tavistock Abbey will be out to secure a start in the Gr.1 Victoria Derby when he lines up in tomorrow’s Derby Trial at Flemington.

The Anthony Freedman-trained gelding broke his maiden at his third start at Bendigo two weeks ago with a four-length victory over 1600m.

“He has come through the victory in terrific order and his work on Saturday morning at Flemington was very strong,” Freedman said.

“He looks like an ideal Derby candidate. The Tavistock/Zabeel cross has been successful in the race before,” he added in reference to 2015 winner Tarzino.

All going well, there are a number of different options for Tavistock Abbey as he progresses towards the Group One feature at Flemington on November 4.

“We will get through Wednesday first, but if he was to run well, we could use the Vase at Moonee Valley or the Geelong Classic as his final lead-up to the Derby,” Freedman said. - freedman.com.au
