The well-related Sir Diamond produced a stirring display under 61.5kg at Newcastle to win for the third time in his career.

The Cambridge Stud graduate, who has a half-brother in our Book 1 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale draft in March, relished the 2100 metre trip and the rain-affected going to score comfortably.

The Scott Singleton-trained gelding settled down at the tail of the field and was still last with 600 metres to run. Rider Mitchell Bell was able to get Sir Diamond into the clear and they drove between runners to score by 1.5l.

“The 2100 metres was his go and he’ll run further if he settles. It was a good effort and he’s going to be a pretty handy stayer,” Singleton said.

“He’s not quite there yet, we’re taking baby steps at the moment.”

A $55,000 purchase at Karaka, he is a son of the Danehill mare Love Diamonds who has produced seven winners, including the G2 Lowland Stakes and G3 Eulogy Stakes winner and joint New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Queen Of Diamonds.

It is another branch of the legendary Eight Carat family and Love Diamond’s colt by Embellish will be offered as Lot 386 at Karaka in March.
