Improving five-year-old Dionysus looked to have conditions in his favour when he stepped out over 2200 metres at Awapuni on Saturday and he duly saluted in the style of a horse that will be effective over even further.

The son of Ocean Park advertised his staying credentials when he won the Dunstan Feeds Stayers Championship Final over 2400 metres last preparation and he has loftier ambitions this season which include nominations for the Auckland and Wellington Cups.

Dionysus has proven to be a shrewd acquisition for his trainers Roger James and Robert Wellwood. The Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan-bred gelding was purchased from our draft for $45,000 on behalf of James and Wellwood's longtime stable clients Ron and Fran Dixon.

A son of Tavistock mare La Quinta, Dionysus already has four wins to his name and prizemoney in excess of $120,000.
