Drilling down on the Tavistock numbers

18 Jan 2016

Right now Tavistock - who has 50 yearlings by him at Karaka next week - is the sire of 61 individual winners.

While he has three crops of racing age, it should be noted that he's had just the one third-crop (2YOs) runner out - so any close look at his statistics should be drawn from his first two crops.

Crop One - now four-year-olds including the Gr.1 winner Volkstok'n'barrell, the Gr.2 winner Werther and the unbeaten Hasselhoof - has produced 45 individual winners from 64 runners, that's a winning strike rate of 70.31%.

Crop Two - now three-year-olds including the Gr.1 winner Tarzino and the Gr.3 winner Tavago - has produced 16 individual winners from 33 runners, a strike-rate of close to 50%.

The overall Stakes Performers to Runners is very interesting too, here's how Tavistock compares to other high-profile Australasian stallions who commenced stud duties in 2010...

  • TAVISTOCK - 13 Stakes Performers from 98 runners - 13.26%

  • I AM INVINCIBLE - 20 Stakes Performers from 166 runners - 12.04%

  • MANHATTAN RAIN - 11 Stakes Performers from 109 runners - 10.09%

  • SWISS ACE - 7 Stakes Performers from 95 runners - 7.36%

  • NICCONI - 8 Stakes Performers from 159 runners - 5.03%

This season alone Tavistock leads the New Zealand Stallion Premiership for individual winners (36), despite the fact that he only went to stud in 2010 and has just three crops of racing age.

Here is the up-to-date NZ Premiership for individual winners...

  • Tavistock - to stud 2010 - 36 winners

  • Darci Brahma - to stud 2007 - 33 winners

  • Pins - to stud 2000 - 33 winners

  • Savabeel - to stud 2005 - 32 winners

  • Iffraaj - to stud 2007 - 28 winners
