Whiskey Lies continues to surprise his Ruakaka co-trainer Ken Rae with his performances this preparation.

The son of our exciting young Savabeel stallion Embellish completed a hat-trick of home track wins when he comfortably won the $60,000 Winter Championship 2YO Final over 1200 metres.

“You wouldn’t put a cent on him from his trackwork and even the trial he had at Avondale before his first win was terrible,” Rae said.

However, come race day Whiskey Lies is all business and, in a repeat of his previous two successes, he was quickly into stride to make the running and was travelling boldly on the turn.

The colt responded gallantly to the urgings of regular rider Jasmine Fawcett to draw clear in the closing 200 metres to remain undefeated this preparation and is now likely to go for a well-deserved break.

Bred by the Hawkins family’s Wentwood Grange, Whiskey Lies was a $12,000 purchase by Mal Barratt at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale.

He is out of the Darci Brahma mare Champagne Katie, who is from the family of former champion juvenile and two-time Group 1 winner Lycra.
