Burgundy 2YO filly Saone delivered on the promise shown on debut for a game win over 1400m at Ballarat today.
Saone caught the eye with a fast-finishing third at her first start two weeks ago for trainer Lindsey Smith.
She was duly sent out a $1.40 short-priced favourite today and rewarded this support with a never say die effort, racing from the rear of the field to score by a length under Dean Yendall.
“She didn’t like the Polytrack coming back in her face and lost her spot early. Once in the clear though, she came home like a nice horse,” said Smith.
She pulled up with a heart rate in the low 90’s, so she does have a good engine there.”
Saone was purchased from Cambridge Stud’s 2018 NZB Book One Yearling draft for $110,000 by Riverrock Farm. Riverrock subsequently sold her privately via bloodstock agent Phill Cataldo to Brad Spicer.
“She was always in a class of her own,” recalled Riverrock Farm’s Chad Orsmby.
“We trialled her and won and it was bloodstock agent Phill Cataldo who convinced Brad Spicer of Spicer Thoroughbreds to buy her.”
In addition to Brad Spicer, Saone is raced by Princeton Thoroughbred Stud, Michael Boyd, Daniel Portelli, Luke Vandersluys and Craig & Kathleen Pearce.
“Phill said to me she was one of the best fillies around and looked like an Oaks type filly,” said Brad.
“From here, we are likely to target Caulfield’s Gr.3 Ethereal Stakes (2000m) during the Spring and then hopefully, she’ll stretch out to an Oaks.”
Bred by Cambridge Stud, Saone is by Burgundy and is out of the winning Keeper mare Dancing Forever - the noted dam of stakes winner Respin, stakes placegetter Dame Margo Fonteyn, along with six winners from six to race.
Dancing Forever produced a Tavistock colt in 2018 and is booked to visit Roaring Lion in 2019.
