Talented filly Sudbina provided our shuttle stallion Almanzor with a timely boost when she swamped her rivals in the G3 Desert Gold Stakes a Trentham.

The Roger James and Robert Wellwood-trained three-year-old came off a previous age group win at Hastings and warm congratulations go to co-breeders and owners Haunui Bloodstock and Frantic Bloodstock.

She provided Almanzor with his sixth individual Southern Hemisphere stakes winner, a tally that most notably features the G1 VRC Derby winner Manzoice.

We will offer a quality mix of nine sons and daughters of our multiple Group 1-winning son of Wootton Bassett in our Book 1 draft at the upcoming New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale.

Ridden by Kozzi Asano, Sudbina produced a powerhouse performance at Trentham and settled at the at the tail of the field off a wide gate.

“We just said to Kozzi to get her into a rhythm and she had showed her turn of foot at Hastings and she sizzled home again,” Wellwood said.

The filly picked up ground 600 metres from home to cornered widest and thundered home for the third win of her seven-start career.

“We were disappointed when the draws came out for this race earlier in the week, but the way the track has worked out and the way this race ended up being run, it probably worked in our favour a little bit,” Wellwood said.

“We’ve been scratching our heads a little bit in terms of what distance might suit her best.

“We were just hoping she’d get the mile in this race, but off this performance, perhaps she might go even further. We’ll talk to her connections and work out a plan from here.”

Sudbina is a half-sister to former New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Fix, who was a multiple Group 2 winner and also placed in the G1 New Zealand Derby and G1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas.
