Grandson of Champagne born at Cambridge Stud

6 Sep 2012

Alamantra, an Elusive Quality daughter of the Melbourne Cup runner-up Champagne, produced a colt by Exceed and Excel at Cambridge Stud yesterday.

The colt was bred by Bob Emery (Belvedere Farm) who raced the great mare Champagne from the stable of Laurie Laxon.  Her 7 wins included the VRC LKS MacKinnon Stakes-Gr.1 and STC Ansett Australia Stakes-Gr.1.  While she also won three Group 3 races and a Listed Race as well, many will remember the mare most for her tussle with fellow Zabeel galloper Jezabeel in the 1998 Melbourne Cup.

At stud Champagne has had 7 winners including Nadege (Giant’s Causeway) and Martique (Danehill), both of which have been Listed Race winners in Brisbane.

The Exceed and Excel colt from Alamanta is her second foal with the mare having produced a colt by Bernardini last year.
