New Zealand's number one stayer, Red Ruler (by Viking Ruler), is likely to embark on an ambitious international campaign following his authoritative win in today's (30.01.10) $250,000 Wellington Cup-Gr.2 (2400m).

Trainer John Sargent has earmarked two important international Cups races for the impressive gelding in the coming months - the HK$14,000,000 Gr.1 Audemars Piguet QEII Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin in Hong Kong in April and, after that, the Gr.1 Singapore Airlines International Cup at Kranji during the middle of May.

Red Ruler was dominant in the Wellington Cup and although he is yet to win a Group One race, he has been placed second at the elite level on three occasions.

At three years he was second to Nom du Jeu in the Australian Derby (2400m).

At four years he was second to Princess Coup in the Kelt Capital Stakes (2040m), while this season at five years he has been placed second in the Zabeel Classic (2000m) behind Vosne Romanee.

Cambridge Stud will offer five yearlings by the stallion at the Karaka Premier Sale on Monday and Tuesday.

Cambridge Stud has a further five yearlings by Viking Ruler at the Karaka Select Sale which is set to be staged next Wednesday, Thursday & Friday
