Loose Cannon One to Watch

Tavistock’s debut winning filly Loose Cannon emerged as one to watch this weekend.

The Stephen Marsh-trained three-year-old had shown ability with two trial outings for two wins, but with a wide barrier 16 draw, little was expected of her first raceday appearance. Despite this, the plucky filly got up along the inside, snatching victory at Ruakaka under Mark Hills in the final bound for owners, the Go Racing Gunfire Syndicate (Mgr: Albert Bosma).

“The plan was to let her find her feet from that wide barrier and for her to be hitting the line well,” explained Marsh after the race.

“Today’s win was outstanding.”

Bred by Chris and Rosanna Luoni, Loose Cannon looks like she could well add some notable races to her pedigree and that of her two-time winning Mr Henrysee dam, Head Enfilade.

“We’ve thought for some time that she was high class, so if all goes to plan, she’ll be on a Gr.1 NZ 1000 Guineas path,” said Marsh.

Loose Cannon was initially purchased from Brighthill Farm’s draft by NZB as Agent at the 2016 National Weanling Sale for $135,000. She then returned as a yearling, selling from Curraghmore’s 2017 Premier draft to Go Racing for $150,000.
