Lucky Unicorn filly third in elite 3YO Series

Capital Diamond, a filly from the first crop of Cambridge Stud’s young stallion Lucky Unicorn, is a genuine contender for the coveted title of New Zealand Bloodstock 3YO Filly of the Year.

Capital Diamond (Lucky Unicorn ex Diamond Smile, by Zabeel) is currently in third position on the points table for the Series, having been a model of consistency this season with placings in the NZ 1000 Guineas-Gr.1 (1600m), Eulogy Stakes-Gr.3 (1600m), Desert Gold Stakes-Gr.3 (1600m) and Cambridge Stud Sir Tristram Fillies Classic-Gr.2 (2000m).

With two races in the Filly of the Year Series remaining and Capital Diamond likely to run in both, the Lisa Latta-trained filly looks well placed to make her claim for the title.

The next race is the Lowland Stakes-Gr.3 (2100m) to be run at Hastings, 03 March, carrying 6 points for first; 3 points for second and 1.5 points for third.  Safely through that run the Wellfield New Zealand Oaks-Gr.1 (2400m) is on the agenda at Trentham Gardens, 17 March.  The Oaks carries 12 points to the winner; 7 points for second and 3.5 points for third.

The current top six in the NZB 3YO Filly of the Year standings are

  • Planet Rock (20)

  • Zurella (14)

  • Capital Diamond (12)

  • Testa Secret (10)

  • Quintessential (8)

  • Chicharita (8)
