A step up in distance has brought out the best in the well-related filly Taaffeite.

The Cambridge Stud-bred daughter of Tavistock tackled 1700 metres for the first time in her short career at Ipswich yesterday and it brought about the desired result.

The Matthew Dunn-trained three-year-old was fourth at the top of the straight and rounded off strongly in the run home in the hands of rider Ron Stewart.

Taaffeite was purchased for $60,000 at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale by agent Phill Cataldo on behalf of OTI Racing and partners and had two starts for Cambridge trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman before relocating to Australia.

She is a half-sister to four-time Hong Kong winner Gallant Crown with their dam the Stravinsky mare Justagem, who was successful on three occasions and is in foal to Almanzor.

Justagem is a half-sister to the G1 Captain Cook Stakes and G2 Avondale Cup winner Penny Gem and the Listed Australia Day Cup winner Fairygem. Also up close in the pedigree is Night’s Watch, twice successful at Group 3 level and runner-up in the G1 Toorak Handicap.
