Tavistock stayer Pacorus has added another feature win to his sire's record.

The Chris Wood-trained Gr.3 Rotorua Cup winner scored an emphatic win in Saturday's Kiwifruit Cup (2100m) at Tauranga under stable rider Viktoria Gatu, who has been aboard Pacorus in all but one of his nine wins.

"He ran a great race and loved the conditions – he's a brilliant horse to have in the stable," Gatu said.

Gatu was happy to sit three wide near the pace on Pacorus, who was allowed to stride to the lead 500m from home.

"I was worried I had gone a bit too soon with the weight he had, but he kicked on really well," she said. "He's my number one."

Pacorus was out on his own on straightening and the son of Cambridge Stud's boom Montjeu stallion Tavistock showed no signs of shortening stride in the run to the post.

"I'm thrilled to bits for the horse and the rider. He's a real trier and it was a lovely ride," Wood said.

"He can sustain a long run and with the 58kg we worked out a plan of attack and it all worked out."

Wood now has an eye on the Listed Taumarunui Gold Cup at Rotorua on July 29 for Pacorus and is yet undecided if the five-year-old may has an outing beforehand. – NZ Racing Desk
