Cambridge trainers Tim and Margaret Carter have taken a patient approach with Tavistock five-year-old Summer Wind, but it looks well poised to reap dividends following the gelding’s smart debut win at Te Aroha today.

Summer Wind was originally purchased by Joe Barnes at the 2014 National Weanling Sale for $10,000. Unfortunately, a tendon injury followed, and after spending some time up on the hills, he arrived at the Carters yard as a three-year-old.

For two years the Carter’s have nurtured the horse’s development.

“Everyone who rides him thinks he feels like a really nice horse, so he has been worth waiting for,” said Tim.

“His Hong Kong owner Alan Leung has been great and has been very patient. It has been a very long and slow programme but the horse’s tendons now look good and don’t concern him.”

Summer Wind smart debut came the hands of Lynsey Satherley.

“The 1400m was probably a bit short for him,” said Tim.

“I think he will end up quite a handy stayer.”

Summer Wind is bred by Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan and is out of the Zabeel mare Charlene. She is an unraced sister to Lady Zhivago, the dam of multiple stakes winner Maygrove.
