Kiwi jockey Wiremu Pinn completed a hat-trick of wins at Sandown when he guided the Tavistock five-year-old Deepstrike to victory on the Hillside course.

He allowed the Cambridge Stud graduate plenty of time to find his feet before improving along the rail and they finished strongly nearest to the fence for the seventh win of his career.

“I got back a bit further than intended so I decided to ride him for a bit of luck and it all worked out well,” Pinn said.

“I galloped the horse on Tuesday morning and I was quite bullish about his chances.”

Pinn recently transferred his apprenticeship to Cranbourne trainer Michael Kent, whose son Michael Jnr prepares Deepstrike with Mick Price.

“It was a genius ride by the kid to come up the inside on a wet track,” Kent Jnr said.

“We keep the horse fresh between runs and he goes to the beach and there’s a race for him at Caulfield in two weeks’ time.”

Deepstrike was purchased by Price for $280,000 at Karaka and is a son of the late Zabeel mare Obey who is a half-sister to the G2 Concorde Handicap winner Taimana and the legendary Eight Carat family.
