Cambridge Stud’s assistant farm manager Bevan McCallum (aka Swampy) and wife Corrina Holmes celebrated an eye-catching win with their four-year-old daughter of Tavistock, Heliberry, at Tauranga today.

Bred and owned by the popular Cambridge couple, Heliberry was having her seventh career start for trainer Mark Forbes and despite veering to the outside in the straight, prevailed over her rivals by an impressive 3.5 length margin.

“Sam Spratt actually rode her to instruction and that was to be on the outside – but not quite the outside rail though,” quipped McCallum.

With the smart maiden win under her belt, connections are now weighing up options for the future.

“She should qualify this year, so we might think about a race like the Taranaki Challenge in August with her,” said McCallum.

Helliberry is out of the now deceased Danehill mare Wild Berries, who notably hailed from the Gr.1 family of Serenade Rose, Trekking, Voila Ici, Viva Pataca and Laughing.

To date the Tavistock – Danehill cross has resulted in 64.7% winners-to-runners ratio.
