Exciting Cambridge Stud stallions Power and Burgundy proved savvy choices for broodmares owners looking to turn a profit at the Karaka yearling sales.
Power was the sire of 10 yearlings sold at the premier session of the New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sales Series for an aggregate of $1.64 million, a remarkable $164,000 average for a stallion who for that crop was $9000 plus GST for his service fee.
The Classic-winning Oasis Dream stallion sold up to $380,000 for the colt out of Octapussy, which was knocked down to the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
There were four further $200,000-plus colts sold out of Fastnet Rockette ($280,000 to LB Racing), Wanaka ($250,000 to Dr SP Siu), The Lady ($250,000 to David Ellis) and Game Duchess ($230,000 to Duncan Ramage).
"As a sire, Power is going from strength to strength and we saw a lot of demand from a wide range of buyers for his yearlings at Karaka," Cambridge Stud boss Sir Patrick Hogan said.
"That's a reflection of what his young horses have done on the track and what the unraced horses are showing trainers at home. The word from several leading stables is strong on the Powers."
Burgundy, who has made a flying start with his first crop of two-year-olds, only had a meagre offering at Karaka but what was there was warmly received.
The Redoute's Choice stallion finished with a sale average of $48,928 from a service fee for that season's crop of $6000 plus GST.
David Ellis, who bought and syndicated Burgundy as a yearling and regards him as the fastest horse through Te Akau Racing Stables, went to $145,000 to secure his daughter out of Steaming from the select session of the sale.
"Burgundy had no yearlings in the premier sale but his stock were hotly sought-after in the select sale," Sir Patrick said.
"He's begun his career in the best possible fashion and really that should just be the launching pad for his career. I think he'll prove very popular with breeders next season."
