The connections of Earl Of Devon were rewarded for their patience when the lightly tried three-year-old was successful at Wyong.

Our homebred son of Tavistock was making his third appearance, and first since September, when he produced a strong effort to win over 1350 metres on a rain-affected surface.

Trained by John Thompson, Earl Of Devon raced wide in third spot to the turn and finished determinedly in the run home for Keegan Latham.

“It was an excellent run and Keegan rode him beautifully,” said stable representative and Thompson’s father-in-law Rod Craig, himself a multiple Group 1-winning trainer.

“I was a little bit concerned coming to the turn when he was scrubbed along, but he flattened out really well.”

Earl Of Devon was bought out of our 2021 Karaka draft for $230,000 by Thompson and DGR Thoroughbred Services.

He is the first winner for the Zabeel mare Ziffel whose Tavistock colt was purchased last year by Te Akau’s David Ellis for $500,000.

A half-sister to the ill-fated G2 Silver Slipper Stakes winner Amelia’s Dream, Ziffel has a Merchant Navy yearling colt.
