Sheena strikes just in time

Awapuni unfortunately fell foul of the weather, but not before we managed to strike a winning blow on the abbreviated program.

Cambridge Stud-bred filly Sheena claimed top honours in the second on the card over 1200 metres, after which the track was inspected and deemed unsafe to continue due to rain.

The daughter of Epaulette was leased to Matamata trainer Cody Cole and opened her career in good style when she finished runner-up on in her spring debut at Ruakaka.

Sheena was then unplaced at Avondale, although less than 4l off the winner, and turned her fortunes around at Awapuni.

The three-year-old was caught wide in the early running before improving near the turn and came with a determined finish in the hands of Tegan Newman to score in fine style.

Sheena is the fourth winner for the Dehere mare Danahere, who was purchased with Sheena in utero at the 2019 Inglis Broodmare Sale.

Danahere was successful on five occasions and is a half-sister to the Group winners Oceanex, Amexed and Miss Aotearoa.

She foaled a filly by Almanzor last season before producing another filly by Hello Youmzain this spring.
