We took a tremendous amount of satisfaction out of Sherrif’s return to winning ways at Tauranga.

He is a son of our favourite Danehill mare J’Adane, who only won on one occasion but showed her quality with three Group 1 placings and also performed with distinction at Group 2 and 3 level.

J’Adane has been a star in a broodmare role for us as well, having produced the G3 Trentham Stakes winner Von Tunzelman and the G3 City of Auckland Cup winner Prince Jabeel.

Sherrif was also successful in the G3 Manawatu Classic earlier in his career when prepared by Roger James and it was terrific to see the now seven-year-old add to his winning record since transferring to the coastal stable of trainers Moira and Kieran Murdoch.

“He’s a lovely horse with real quality and it was nice to see him win again. He’s had a back operation and did a lot of rehab work after that,” Moira Murdoch said.

“He’s nicely suited to a mile, but I did think the track might have been a bit inconsistent for him, especially with the 60kg but he rose above it all.”

A son of High Chaparral, Sherrif settled behind the pace at Tauranga for rider Andrew Calder and was under a good hold at the top of the straight.

Once into the clear, he fought doggedly to the post to get in the deciding stride for the sixth win of his career.
