Lightly raced filly Funny Girl bounced back to her best with a dominant performance to down her older Rating 74 rivals at Matamata.

Our daughter of Showcasing had no luck when she was unplaced in her resuming run last month at Te Rapa where she drew a tricky barrier and was posted out on a limb throughout with no cover.

It was a different story this time from an inside gate and rider Sam Spratt was able to give the three-year-old a dream run in the trail.

Funny Girl railed well to lead soon after straightening and surged clear to win by 2.3l with a minimum of fuss. She now has three victories and three placings from nine appearances.

“Everything went wrong in that first run back when she was caught three wide and she was a bit big,” trainer Lance Noble said.

“She had improved and from a better draw it was a good, strong win. She’s not very big, but she does try hard and we’ll take her through the grades and as a four-year-old we can hopefully get some black type with her.”

We purchased her for $50,000 at New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready to Run Sale at Karaka where she was offered by Lilywhites Lodge.

She is from a well-performed Haunui Farm family and is out of the four-time winner Triaction, who is a three-quarter sister to the G1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes winner Perfect Fit. She is a daughter of the triple Group 1 winner Fayreform.

Noble is currently in Brisbane to see stable runner Letzbeglam, who travelled over with members of Tony Pike’s team, run in the Listed Bright Shadow at the Gold Coast.

He thanked his assistant trainer Chris Smith and staff at home for the part they played in Funny Girl’s success.
