Short course specialist Snapper produced a career best performance at Flemington to claim top honours in the G3 Standish Handicap.

The Michael Moroney-prepared son of Power was quickly into stride for rider Jye McNeil to control the 1200 metre feature from the outside and, after surging clear 300 metres from home, proved far too slick for his rivals.

“That was a good effort, he had been a little below par at his last start, but Mike thought he was a bit under done,” stable representative Glen Thompson said.

“He won three in a row last time he was in and has come back well and just loves to bowl along in front.”

Snapper was purchased out of Cambridge Stud’s draft at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale draft for $60,000 by the trainer’s brother Paul and Ballymore Stables and now won six races and more than A$460,000.

His dam is the multiple winner and stakes-placed One Cool Cat mare Onlyarose, also the dam of two-time winner and black-type placegetter Fireglow.

Onlyarose, who was served by Savabeel last season, is a half-sister to the G2 Concorde Handicap winner Taimana and the family of multiple Group 1 winner and sire Danewin, whose brother Commands was successful at Group 3 level and a successful sire.
