Tavistock filly defies rivals again

Impressive juvenile Defiant moved a step closer to a possible black-type assignment when our homebred Tavistock filly struck again over 1000 metres at Riccarton.

It was a second consecutive home track victory for the Shane Kennedy and Anna Furlong-trained youngster, whose only defeat came when second on debut and hampered by a slipped saddle.

Jockey Rohan Mudhoo had Defiant travelling boldly near the pace and she let down strongly to win going away by 2.3l from another of our farm graduates in Diss Is Dramatic.

Next Month’s Listed Champagne Stakes may now beckon Defiant, who was bought out of our Karaka draft by Kennedy for $20,000 and is from Valee, who has since sadly passed away.

She was by Savabeel and hailed from a European family with the second dam a half-sister to the G2 Princess of Wales’s Stakes winner Doctor Freemantle, later made his way to New Zealand and placed in the G1 Zabeel Classic.

The international Group 1 winners and sires Metal Storm, Raintrap, Sunshack and Polish Summer also all feature in this pedigree.
