A step up in distance has again brought out the best in Tavistock’s durable son Above in Hong Kong.
The six-year-old won for the sixth time last night when he outstayed his Class Three rivals over 2200 metres at Happy Valley in the expert hands of Joao Moreira for trainer Tony Millard.
Moreira hugged the fence to drive Above home, who had hinted at another winning run when fourth over 1800 metres in his previous appearance.
“The horses are coming into form and for once we’ve got some better draws than we have been having, Joao rode a beautiful race, he got into a beautiful position,” Moreira told the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s website.
Above was initially offered at Karaka as a weanling by Brighthill Farm and purchased by Ascot Farm and Ampulla Lodge for $180,000.
He was then bought out of Ampulla’s draft at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale by George Moore for A$240,000.
Above is a son of the Thorn Park mare Once More, who dam is a sister to the multiple Group 1 winner and former New Zealand Filly of the Year Snap.
