Deepstrike continued his good second-up record when he proved too strong for his rivals in the Stawell Gold Cup.

The farm graduate had previously been successful off a preparatory outing and that again proved a winning formula for trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr.

A five-year-old son of the late Tavistock, Deepstrike settled at the back of the field on the fence before he was angled off the rail 600 metres from home.

He improved quickly and after swinging widest into the straight, proved too strong despite racing greenly to give rider Dean Yendall his sixth victory in the 1850 metre contest.

Deepstrike was purchased by Price out of our 2019 New Zealand Bloodstock Book 1 Yearling Sale draft for $280,000 and is a son of the late Zabeel mare Obey, also the dam of multiple winner Group 3 performer Zabay.

Obey was a half-sister to the G2 Concorde Handicap winner Taimana and they hail from the famed Eight Carat family, with the Blue Hen mare their fourth dam.
