A rich pedigree was to the fore at Ellerslie this afternoon when Vernazza posted a stylish victory.
Bred and raced by Brendan and Jo Lindsay, the filly rounded off strongly to win at her second start.
It is an exciting development for the stud, as Vernazza represents the first successful graduate who has been weaned and raised at the stud, since the Lindsays took over in 2018.
Vernazza is a daughter of More Than Ready and the Gr.3 Ladies’ Day Vase winner Zonza.
The Zabeel mare is also the dam of Vernazza’s stakes winning stablemate Bavella.
Trained by Lance Noble, Vernazza was coming off a debut run for third at Matamata.
“She was a bit new there and learned a lot. She still over-raced a bit so she’s a work in progress.
“She is a filly with a lot of ability and can only improve, she’s a beautiful type.”
Vernazza raced keenly behind the leaders and came with an irresistible finish under rider Leith Innes.
“I’ll sit down with the team at Cambridge Stud and make a plan for her now,” Noble said.
The timing couldn’t be any better for the winner’s Tavistock half-brother, who will be offered as Lot 417 at the upcoming NZB Book One Yearling Sale in January.
