Well-bred Pinarello pounces at Te Aroha3 Jan 2022

Pinarello has a pedigree to be proud of and we were delighted to see him race up to his illustrious parentage with a hollow victory at Te Aroha this afternoon.

Trained for us by Roger James and Roger Wellwood, he is a son of the late Tavistock and the Zabeel mare Zonza, who won the G3 Ladies’ Day Vase at Caulfield and was a multiple black-type placegetter.

Zonza is now doing an outstanding job as a broodmare as she is also the dam of our G2 Matamata Breeders’ Stakes winner and G1 Diamond Stakes runner-up Vernazza and the Listed Counties Challenge Stakes winner Bavella.

The mare also has an unraced Tavistock two-year-old named Zazon and last year produced an Almanzor filly before she was served by Bivouac.

We offered Pinarello at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale where he failed to meet his $300,000 reserve and that may turn out to be our good luck.

Second on debut last month at Tauranga where he endured a tough run, he settled midfield and one off the fence at Te Aroha before rider Leith Innes edged closer 700 metres from home.

Pinarello strode to the front 200 metres from home and the G1 New Zealand Derby nominee surged clear to romp home by 3.5l.
