Tavistock gelding Werther is shooting for a second Hong Kong Horse of the Year title.

The John Moore trained galloper produced a barnstorming effort for second at his last start in Japan's Gr.1 Takarazuka Kinen, effectively becoming just the second ever foreign galloper to contest the event.

Bred by David Allison, Chris & John Barnao, Andrew Campbell, Tommy Heptinstall, Tom Pivac & David Platt, Werther is nominated for the Champion Middle-distance Horse, the Champion Stayer and for the ultimate Horse of the Year prize. Winners of the Champion Awards will be announced at The Hong Kong Jockey Club Champion Awards 2017/2018 presentation ceremony to be held on Friday, 13 July, at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Hong Kong.

Raced by Johnson Chen, Werther was previously awarded the Hong Kong Horse of the Year in 2016 and has returned over A$10 million in prize money during his 10 win career so far.

His dam Bagalollies is booked to see Tavistock in 2018.
