A change of scenery has agreed with Firstluv and the daughter of Per Incanto shed her maiden tag at Eagle Farm where she produced a tenacious display.

Our four-year-old mare began her career with Bjorn Baker at Warwick Farm before relocating to Jack Bruce’s Deagon stable.

She placed in her first two appearances from her new quarters before breaking through over 1400 metres in the hands of Ben Thompson.

“She’s a talented mare and even though she’s had a few starts she is still learning what it’s all about, I was proud of her effort,” Bruce said.

Firstluv was beaten for early speed and settled third last before picking up ground and she finished determinedly in the run home.

“All’s well that ends well. I think she needs more ground and blinkers at some stage, but she will get a lot of confidence out of that,” Bruce said. “It’s a privilege to win one in these colours.”

We purchased Firstluv out of Little Avondale Stud’s draft at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale for $160,000.

She is the first live foal of the O’Reilly mare Second Obsession, a sister to the G3 Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes winner Hammer Down and the family of the Group 1 winners Maco’Reilly and Plume.
