With Group One racing in New Zealand and Australia complete for the current season, it’s an opportune time to see which stallions have performed best in the races that really matter, Group One competition.
Pleasingly for the New Zealand breeding industry, four of the top six stallions for individual Group One winners across NZ and Australia, stand or have stood in this country.
Zabeel is number one. Efficient (VRC Turnbull Stakes), Jessicabeel (AJC Sydney Cup), Zabrasive (STC Rosehill Guineas) and Zavite (ARC Auckland Cup) provided the Cambridge Stud Super Sire with the top billing.
Sharing the second line with three individual Group One winners apiece are Fastnet Rock (Coolmore Stud), High Chaparral (began his Southern Hemisphere stud career at Windsor Park Stud), Montjeu (began his Southern Hemisphere stud career at Windsor Park Stud), Redoute’s Choice (Arrowfield Stud) and Volksraad (Windsor Park Stud).
The team at Windsor Park Stud will be delighted with news of this list, with three of the top six standing or have stood at their Cambridge-based property. Windsor Park is already the front-runner for Breeder of the Year honours, having bred 13 individual black type winners this season inclusive of the respective Derby winners Monaco Consul (High Chaparral) and Military Move (Volksraad).
