Sword of State
A son of our rising stallion star Sword Of State had buyers’ hearts racing in the early stages of New Zealand Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready to Run Sale.
The handsome youngster was presented as Lot 9 by Chad Ormsby’s Riverrock Farm and Victoria’s Laming Bloodstock had the final say on the colt at $500,000.
“He’s an outstanding individual, he ticked all the boxes and I thought I may have had to pay a bit more, so I was very happy,” Richard Laming said.
“He’ll head down to Woburn Farm now for three or four weeks before we get him over to Melbourne. He looks a potential Guineas type of horse.”
He was bred by Brown Thoroughbreds and is a half-brother to the winners Group performers Sedaka and Suit Yourself.
Their dam is the Rip Van Winkle mare O’Carol, who was successful on three occasions up to 1600 metres, and she is a half-sister to the dual Listed winner Odeon.
The colt’s pedigree also boasts a strong international flavour through Group winners Tale Of A Champion, Bandua, Ilusora, Mr Roary and Olympic Fluke.
“He really stood out to me and if he can put a good win next to his name then he’s a potential stallion prospect,” Laming said.
Another Sword Of State heading across the Tasman is Lot 149 who was bought of BMD Bloodstock’s draft for $120,000 by Lindsay Park Racing and agent Dean Hawthorne.
He is a son of the Tavistock mare Tango Gold whose half-sister is the G1 Schweppes Oaks winner Princess Jenni, also victorious in the G2 Stocks Stakes and at Group 3 level inn the Alexandra Stakes and Bendigo Cup.
Meanwhile, we also enjoyed success from the other side of the fence with the $200,000 purchase of Lot 225, a well-related daughter of Savabeel from the Lilywhites Lodge consignment.
The filly is out of the English-bred Oasis Dream mare Arabian Night whose half-sister Olaya was a North American Group 3 winner.

Sword Of State’s burgeoning stallion career took another significant step at the Te Rapa trials.
Our resident son of Snitzel was represented by his first winner when the homebred and raced State Of Valour coasted to victory in his two-year-old heat over 730 metres.
Prepared for us by Chad Ormsby, the youngster was quickly into stride to sit on the pace and lengthened stride in the run home under a minimum of urging by Tayla Mitchell to score by three and a-half lengths.
“I was very impressed by what he did with the little practice that he’s had,” his trainer said.
“He came to us to be broken in and we identified him as quite an early type, we got him going and everything from that time on has been really natural.
“I’ve been impressed by the stallion and have got a couple by him in the stable and this one is the more forward of the two.”
State Of Valour failed to meet his $60,000 reserve when offered at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale and is a son of the French-bred Lope De Vega mare Illadore, whose family boasts an abundance of international stakes winners.
“I’ll talk to the team and think we can go to the races with him now, he’s a half-brother to Sister Ping who we had later in her career, and she was very fast over a shorter distance and I think he’s in a similar mould,” Ormsby said.
Sword Of State won four times as a juvenile, with his career highlight a victory in the G1 Sistema Stakes to claim champion two-year-old honours.
He trained on the following season to claim two Group 3 prizes, including a defeat of ten-time top-flight winner Imperatriz in the Almanzor Trophy.

Second crop representatives of our resident sire Sword Of State found favour with Australasian buyers during New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Weanling Sale.
A quality selection of youngsters by the Group 1 winning son of Snitzel were on offer at Karaka and sold up to $120,000.
Lot 129 from Curraghmore’s draft was a popular colt and eventually knocked down to the final bid of Waikato operation Kaha Nui Farm.
Out of the Helmet mare Goldilicious, he is a half-brother to the G3 Easter Cup winner Torranzino with the third dam Showella, the Group 1 winner of the New Zealand Stakes and South Australian Derby.
“He was a very late foal so we forgave him for being on the lighter side than what I would normally look at, but he is just a baby, and he will furnish pretty well, I hope,” Kaha Nui’s Nicky White said.
Victorian Bloodstock agent Cameron Cooke also joined the Sword Of State fan club when he went to $90,000 for Lot 36 from the draft of Elsdon Park.
The colt is a half-brother to multiple Group placegetter Sedaka with their dam the Rip Van Winkle mare O’Carol and the family of international stakes winners Tale Of A Champion, Ilusora, Bandua, Olympic Flue and Mr Roary.
Cooke later paid $55,000 for Lot 77 from Curraghmore, a grandson of the two-time Group winer Lady Kipling also a multiple placegetter at the highest level.
Meanwhile, our own Sword Of State youngster, Lot 69, was knocked down to Auckland-based company Lordof Wingrove for $55,000.
His dam is the Street Cry mare Solar Cry who is a half-sister to three-time elite level winner Sunlight and her siblings Sisstar and Clean Energy were the respective G3 winners of the Red Roses Stakes and Typhoon Tracy Stakes.
The family has also enjoyed updates from the recent Brisbane juvenile winner and stakes performer Susstainable.
Lordof Wingrove also successfully secured Lot 110 from our consignment, a colt by Spirit Of Boom and the first foal of the Snitzel mare Chenzel.
The second dam is the G1Auckland Cup winner Chenille, whose half-sister Chintz was a multiple Group winner and top-flight placegetter whose son Not An Option won twice at Listed level in Australian in our colours.
It’s a pedigree page that also features Mo’unga, the two-time Group 1 winner of the Winx Stakes and Rosehill Guineas.
Waikato buyers GST Bloodstock took a shine to our son of Savabeel, Lot 25, and secured him for $56,000.
The colt is out of the winning So You Think mare Meghan, who also placed in the G3 Sunline Vase, and her half-brothers Devildom and Reevederci were also stakes performers.
It is also the family of champion sire Last Tycoon with international form added by Group winners Mon Petit Cherie, Ice Queen and Rabah.
