State Secret looks a filly who can make her mark in good company off the back of an impressive debut performance at Hawera.

The daughter of our resident sire Sword Of State trekked south from her Byerley Park base to overcome an unsuitably heavy track and a wide run to post a convincing victory for trainer Steven Cole.

“At the Avondale trials she won well, and this trip will make her, she’s a really nice filly,” he said.

Jockey George Rooke rode her in that 1000 metre heat and was keen to continue his association on race day.

“I liked her and she’s very honest and willing, she will also improve a lot,” he said.

State Secret settled well back before she improved five wide 600 metres from home to hit the front early in the straight and held a strong gallop at the end of 1200 metres to deliver at the first time of asking.

She was bred by Wilko Bloodstock and purchased by Cole at New Zealand Bloodstock’s Online Yearling Sale for $10,000 on behalf of his father David.

The filly is a half-sister to G1 Queensland Derby placegetter Chase Your Dreams with their dam the O’Reilly mare Dare To Dream who also has a two-year-old sister to State Secret.
