Trainer’s confidence rewarded

Paul Nelson was in a bullish pre-race mood with Poetic Justice on his home track at Hastings and his confidence wasn’t misplaced.

He had been more than happy with the son of Almanzor’s lead-up efforts and the six-year-old capped those off with success over 2200 metres for rider Erin Leighton.

“I don’t bet, but I had one on him. It was a very good effort after getting to the front early,” said Nelson, who trains in partnership with Corrina McDougal.

Formerly with Tony Pike, he has now won twice from 29 starts but nine runner-up finishes points to his genuine nature.

We sold Poetic Justice at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale to Pike for A$330,000 and is a half-brother to multiple winners Sea Poem and Sestina.

Their dam is the Street Cry mare Prose Poem whose Sword Of State colt was bought by Ciaron Maher at Karaka last year for $160,000 and she has a yearling filly by Chaldean.

The English-bred Prose Poem is from the family of the two-time French Group 1 winner and sire Lawman.
