Almanzor mare back in style

Quality mare Mary Shan opened her quest for a deserved black type victory this preparation with a strong resuming victory at Wanganui.

The quality daughter of Almanzor came from back in the field with a stirring finish wide out on the track to score over 1200 metres for trainer Andrew Forsman and rider Matthew Cameron.

“We thought there might have been a bit more speed in the race, so it was a really good effort,” stable representative Joe Walker said.

“It looked the right race to kick her off in and now we’ll look at the Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes (G3) and the Merial Metric Mile (G3).”

Success in either event would be richly deserved for the mare who has been a four-time runner-up at stakes level.

Mary Shan is out of the High Chaparral mare Shanzam, who won three occasions in Australia up to 1300 metres, and all four of her foals to race have been successful.

Shanzam has an unraced Almanzor three-year-old filly named Arrazola who was bought by Te Akau’s David Elis for $150,000 at Karaka and the dam produced a colt by our resident stallion last season.
