Landman was sent out a short-priced favourite on debut at Woodville and was untroubled to justify his support and encourage connections to look at an early black-type challenge.

A son of our champion first season sire Hello Youmzain, the three-year-old had impressed at the trials and carried that form over to race day with a smart performance to win over 1100 metres in the hands of Jonathan Riddell.

“He’s a pretty fair sort of horse and has always shown a lot,” said co-trainer Sam O’Malley, who celebrated his first training success since joining Bill Thurlow in partnership.

“He goes pretty well and got the job done nicely. I think we can look at something like the Wanganui Guineas (Listed, 1200m) with him now.”

Landman was tardily away and sat at the back of the small field before improving to be third on the turn and let down strongly for a comfortable win, despite racing greenly in the closing stages.

He is a half-brother to his multiple-winning stablemate Mister Fletcher, a son of Almanzor, with their dam the Captain Rio mare Midnight Delight.

She is a half-sister to the Group winners Underthemoonlight and Storming The Tower with the former also the dam Romancing The Moon, successful in the G1 Levin Classic.
