Stakes success well deserved

Durable performer War Eternal added a hard-earned black-type victory to his record when our homebred claimed top honours in the Listed Bernborough Handicap at Doomben.

Trained by Bjorn Baker, the son of Pierro has previously placed three times at Group level before breaking through over 1600 metres in the hands of Zac Purton.

“He’s been a remarkable horse and been around a long time,” Baker’s bloodstock agent Jim Clarke said.

“That’s his first stakes win and it’s well deserved, he’s hit the crossbar a few times.”

The seven-year-old was quickly into stride from the inside gate to track the pace and was through at the top of the straight to strike the front and held on strongly in the run to the post.

We sold War Eternal for $160,000 at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale and he’s the first foal of the Fastnet Rock mare Aleria.

She is out of the dual stakes winner and G1 Robert Sangster Stakes placegetter Impressive Eagle, a half-sister to the G1 Queensland Derby winner Eagle Way.

Aleria produced a filly by Almanzor last season and is now in foal to Chaldean, our multiple Group 1-winning son of the mighty Frankel.
