Bulgari displays versatility

Bulgari showed he was no one trick pony with his victory over 1500 metres at Ellerslie.

Trainers Darryn and Briar Weatherley tested him over more ground and the three-year-old responded positively with a strong finishing run from the tail of a small field under rider Corentin Berge.

Bulgari has measured up encouragingly in top three-year-old company with a runner-up finish in the G3 Almanzor Trophy a highlight and has now opened more doors with his latest win.

“We definitely thought he wouldn’t get passed 1200 metres, so he’s made liars of us, he’s a very good colt with a good future,” Briar Weatherley said.

“We have looked at getting him down to Riccarton (for the New Zealand Cup carnival) for some sprints, but now he’s won over 1500 metres we can look at other options as well.”

Bulgari was sold at Karaka by breeder Jamieson Park for $220,000 with his dam O’Naturelle a half-sister to the mother of the Weatherley family’s G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas winner Pier.
