3YO maintains relentless gallop

Almanzor’s son Relentless made the long trip south to Tauherenikau worthwhile with a strong staying performance.

Trained at Cambridge by Shaune Ritchie and Colm Murray, the three-year-old was second up after a midfield finish over a mile when resuming at Ellerslie and relished the rise to 2050 metres.

Our homebred set a steady pace in the hands of Bruno Queiroz and, despite racing greenly in the straight, comfortably held his older rivals at bay to record his second win from seven appearances.

Portofino is the first foal of the Tavistock mare Portofino whose half-brother Mongolian Marshal won the G3 Waikato Cup and are representatives of the Eight Carat family.

We sold Relentless to Ritchie Murray Racing at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale for $200,000 and last year Wexford Stakes purchased his half-sister by Hello Youmzain, named Finozino, for $75,000.

Portofino also has a yearling daughter of Hello Youmzain and is back in foal to Almanzor.
